There are basically 3 stories as to why there are no snakes in Ireland. One says St. Patrick chased them all into the ocean, another says he put them all into a box and threw the box into the ocean. The third suggests that the snakes in the story are symbolic of Paganism. When St. Patrick went back to Ireland after escaping slavery he succeeded in converting most of the island from Paganism to Catholicism, thus ridding the island of "snakes." But it is true that there are no snakes in the wild in Ireland.
    8- F
I just threw that in to mess up my students...

The first St. Patrick's Day celebration/parade was in NY, which still holds the largest St. Patrick's Day parade today.

    There's your St. Patty's Day lesson! :)
The most any of my students have gotten right so far is 6, but average is 2-3, so don't feel bad if you failed miserably. :)

  2. Very interesting! I need to research more about leprechauns. There were incredibly believing 1st graders at school yesterday. In dead seriousness they let me know that Mrs. Grover had a real leprechaun locked in the drawer of her desk. And about 30 students all huddled around a sewer grate in the playground because someone HAD seen the hand of a dead leprechaun down there! And after morning recess, one of the kindergarten classes returned to their room to find that it was a MESS! Absolute proof that leprechauns are REAL!

  3. Hehe... From what I read I gathered that they started out as political cartoon depictions of poor Irish immigrants, then holiday card companies jacked the image and commercialized it.
